History of White Bear Lake
From Dakota legend to lakeside destination
The area now known as White Bear Lake was originally the migratory hunting and harvesting grounds of the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples for thousands of years. The city's name derives from a Dakota legend about a great white bear that once roamed the shores of the lake.
European-American settlers established White Bear Township in 1858, the same year Minnesota achieved statehood. The extension of the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad to White Bear Lake on September 10, 1868 transformed the area into a popular resort destination, reducing travel time from Saint Paul to just twenty minutes. Grand resorts and hotels like Barnum's Hotel, the Williams House, and the Ramaley Pavilion (opened 1879) attracted visitors from across the Mississippi River region.
The city of White Bear Lake was officially incorporated on October 11, 1921, with a population of just over 2,000 covering 2.25 square miles. Rapid suburban growth in the 1950s and 1960s expanded the city to 7 square miles and approximately 13,000 residents by 1960. Economic development programs in the 1970s and 1980s strengthened the local tax base and employment. Today, White Bear Lake is home to nearly 25,000 residents across 8.63 square miles, with a charming downtown, 24 public parks, and strong community organizations.
