History of Little Canada

Little Canada traces its origins to 1844 when Benjamin Gervais, a French-Canadian fur trader originally from Berthier-en-Haut, Quebec, settled along the shores of what is now Lake Gervais. He and his family were among the earliest European settlers in the region, arriving even before the Minnesota Territory was formally organized. The settlement was colloquially called "Little Canada" because of the predominantly French-Canadian families who homesteaded the area.
